Vide Note in an after part of the volume

Probity inclining in such case, as it might be conjectured, to the aspect of the overseas grower.

I merely counsel this as one of many expedients that could be resorted to, for embarrassing the British cupboard, and getting ready the way in which for a rupture. Ingenious diplomatists won’t ever be at a loss for ample matter of disagreement, when disagreement is discovered to be handy.

The London capitalists, then completely conscious that the prosperity of the nation has at size utterly handed the culminating level, mil not obtain with their lengthy wonted complacency, the propositions of the Chancellor of the Exchequer; for the barometer of the Metropolis in these issues distinctly consists within the supposed obtainable sources of the federal government. The ministers will, subsequently have considerable purpose to temporize, nonetheless grating it might be to their emotions. The haughty and unceremonious communications often made to them from the courtroom of the autocrat will, subsequently, be listened to with a suppressed—a smothered resentment.

Within the meantime, the urgent conduct of the Russian envoy will get wind. A few of our manly and decided champions of the agricultural pursuits, justly alarmed for the results, and sensibly alive to the speculation of rents—will go right down to the “Home,”—threaten the stoletov bulgaria tours Authorities, and vituperate the Emperor. Different nation gents, warmed probably into eloquence by the peculiar nature of the topic, will loudly chime in with and help the daring admonitions and profound maims of their distinguished leaders.

Faithfully reported

His Imperial Majesty may have each phrase faithfully reported to him and can undoubtedly add this to of his grievances, making it the extra fast groundwork of a rupture, preluded by a criticism, in excessive phrases, of the insults thus handed upon a devoted pal and ally by the turbulent meeting of the English Commons.

Then will there be discovered amongst us those that will dilate on the advantages, beneath all circumstances, of tranquility; on the Utopian absurdity of the consultant system; on the unfitness of widespread governments; the illusiveness of that out of date chimera of political visionaries the “stability of energy.”

Nonetheless, nonetheless, it might be assuaging to confess that, although diminished in exercise, the looms, the anvils, and varied scientific aids of business may have solely partially discontinued their helpful labors. Our residence consumption alone will as but protect to them a substantial exercise. The industrious and confirmed habits of a business folks, often lengthy stay to mitigate the decline of their nationwide integrity and power. The diminution might be gradual, not violent.

Ultimately, certainly, the arm of the British artisan might chill out its vigor, if, with despair, he discovers that an arbitrary subtraction from his hardly earned positive factors goes to the tributary sustenance, or forbearance, of a overseas military or for the replenishment of a overseas coffer, leaving him however a scanty and inadequate surplus for his particular person upkeep, or for that of his necessitous household.

Turks from the big centers

“And all this crowd is lively and busy. All people talks and gesticulates and rushes by way of the streets to perform some goal.

“The fashionable European contact is introduced by the Turks from the large facilities, Nationalist leaders who’ve come right here from Constantinople and different giant cities, clad in sack fits or in uniforms minimize on western patterns, however all carrying the black fur kolpak which has changed all through the nation the crimson felt fez as nationwide head gear.

“Within the village correct there may be not a home which doesn’t shelter extra folks than it has rooms: So fairly just a few of the individuals who now dwell in Angora have been quartered in small farmhouses across the nation and are obliged to commute day-after-day to and from their enterprise. There are after all no suburban trains or avenue vehicles and the “commuters,, are obliged to make use of carriages as all of the cars principally Fords are getting used for navy functions or for transporting vacationers and items from villages to villages. The carriage is due to this fact the one technique of conveyance in Angora. “Carriage” is, after all, a fairly complimentary time period: true that they’ve 4 wheels and are drawn by horses, however they typically don’t have any springs, and two boards operating parallel to one another and dealing with the horse are used as seats. From their picket roofs grasp coloured curtains and the occupants are vigorously shaken over the uneven pavement of the streets.

Import them from Constantinople

“There are solely a only a few outlets, however nobody has time or leisure to buy. The strict requirements of life may be obtained on the open counters of the bazaars or markets and if they aren’t to be discovered there one has both to do with out or to import them from Constantinople or from another metropolis. Amusement locations are completely nonexistent: no theaters, not even motion pictures. And naturally no saloons or bars since Prohibition is vigorously enforced in Anatolia. There are one or two coffeehouses the place just a few previous native peasants sit peacefully and, over a cup of espresso or a smoke of the ‘narghile discuss of the nice previous days. The hostelry of the place has its lounge become a dormitory.

Vacationers are at instances obliged to sleep even on the steps of the steps, so no area may be allotted for recreation. Moreover it will be ineffective; nobody right here has time for amusement or recreation and when you ask anybody how he passes his time he’ll be capable to reply you with a single phrase: Work.’ Everyone seems to be at work to avoid wasting the lifetime of the nation, everyone seems to be endeavoring to enhance the neighborhood, and everyone seems to be engaged in helping in a roundabout way or different the Authorities and the nation.

A poor soldier of fortune

Strangest of all this, that the mad agony of grief, the fervour of desolation that came across me when our lengthy partnership was dissolved for ever, ought to now be nothing however a reminiscence, like different recollections, to be summoned up out of the resting-places of the thoughts, toyed with, idly questioned, and dismissed with a sigh and a smile! What an actual factor it was simply ten years in the past; what a really current ache! Imagine me, Will, sure, I need you to consider this that in these first hours of loneliness I might have welcomed dying; dying would have fallen upon me as calmly as sleep has fallen upon my boy within the room past there.

Extravagant

You knew nothing of this then; I suppose you however half consider it now; for our parting was manly sufficient. I saved as stiff an higher lip as you probably did, for all there was much less hair on it. Maybe it appears extravagant to you. However there was a deal of distinction between our instances. You had turned your pen to money-making, on the name of affection; you had been going to Stillwater to marry the judges daughter, and to change into a fantastic land-owner and mayor of Stillwater and millionaire or what’s it now? And far of this you foresaw or hoped for, not less than. Hope is one thing. However for me? I used to be left within the third-story of a poor lodging- home in St. Marks Place, my finest good friend gone from me; with neither remembrance nor hope of Like to stay on, and with my final story again from all of the magazines.

We won’t discuss it. Let me get again to my nice library with the books and the photographs and the glancing fire-light, and me with my toes in your bearskin rug, listening to my wifes step within the subsequent room.

To your ear, for our communion has been so lengthy and so shut that to both of us the faintest inflection of the others voice speaks clearer than formulated phrases; to your ear there have to be one thing akin to a tone of remorse remorse for the outdated days in what I’ve simply mentioned. And would it not be unusual if there have been?

A poor soldier of fortune who had been set to a mans work earlier than he had carried out along with his meager boyhood, who had handed from recruit to a spot of a younger veteran in that nice, hard-fighting, unresting pioneer military of journalism; was he the person, hastily, to stretch his toughened sinews out and allow them to chill out within the glow of the house fireside? Wouldn’t his legs start to twitch for the highway; would he not be wild to really feel once more the rain in his weatherbeaten face?

Would you suppose it unusual if at night time he ought to toss in his white, comfortable mattress, longing to alter it for a blanket on the turf, with the broad procession of sunlit worlds sweeping over his head, past the blue areas of the night time? And even when the expensive face on the pillow subsequent him had been to wake and have a look at him with reproachful shock; and even when heat arms drew him again to his new allegiance; wouldn’t his coronary heart in desires go throbbing to the rhythm of the drum or the music of songs sung by the camp-fire?

Dry local weather of western Uttar Pradesh

The traditional Indians left innumerable materials stays The stone temples in south India and the brick monasteries in jap India nonetheless stand to remind us ‘of the good constructing actions of the previous However the main a part of these stays lies buried within the mounds scattered everywhere in the nation. Just a few have been uncovered to offer us some data of the lifetime of the traditional individuals.

Since most websites have been dug vertically they supply a very good chronological sequence of fabric tradition. Horizontal diggings, being very costly, are only a few in quantity, with the consequence that excavations don’t give us a full and full image of fabric life in lots of phases of historical Indian historical past

Even in these mounds which have been excavated the traditional stays have been preserved in various proportions. Within the dry local weather of western Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and north-western India antiquities are present in a greater state of preservation, however within the moist and humid local weather of the center Gangetic basin and within the deltaic areas even iron implements undergo corrosion and dust constructions turn into tough to detect. It’s only within the section of burnt brick constructions or stone constructions that spectacular and large-scale, stays are present in moist and alluvial areas Excavations have delivered to mild the cities which the individuals established round 2500 B.C. in north-western India.

Equally they inform us in regards to the materials tradition which was developed within the Gangetic basin. They present the structure of the settlements through which individuals lived, the kind of pottery they used, the type of home through which they dwelt, the form of cereals they used as meals, and the kind of instruments and implements they dealt with. Some individuals in south India buried together with the useless, their instruments, weapons, pottery and different belongings within the graves, which had been encircled by huge items of stone.

These constructions are known as megaliths, though all megaliths don’t fall on this class by digging them we now have come to study of the life which individuals lived within the Deccan from the iron age onwards. The science which permits us to dig the previous mounds in a scientific method, in successive layers, and to type an thought of the fabric lifetime of the individuals is named archaeology.

Materials stays recovered on account of excavation and exploration are subjected to numerous sorts of scientific examination. Their dates are mounted based on the radio-carbon technique, for which services exist in India. The historical past of local weather and vegetation is thought by an examination of plant residues, and particularly by pollen-analysis. Thus on this foundation it’s advised that agriculture was practiced in Rajasthan and Kashmir way back to 6000 B.C. The character and elements of steel artifacts are analyzed scientifically, and consequently the sources from the place metals had been obtained are situated and the levels within the growth of steel expertise are recognized. An examination of animal bones permits us to search out out whether or not the animals had been domesticated, and in addition to level out the makes use of to which they had been put.

Victories at the Dardanelles

“His energy, his straightforwardness, his frankness and the rapidity with which he made decisions coupled to the firmness with which he saw that decisions, once made, were immediately executed became apparent even during the first weeks of his administration and gradually won him the full confidence and devotion of his people. This would have been his opportunity had the desired to establish a dictatorship, had he wanted to place his personal interests above the interests of his country, had his democratic utterances been of the lips and not of the heart. During the first months of the national movement Turkey was taking the chance of seeing its individual freedom trampled once more under the booted feet of an AbdulHamid or Enver.

If the leader who was offering himself had been any one else than Mustapha Kemal. But the Pasha had given a few years before the proof of his matchless patriotism and abnegation by stepping back into an inconspicuous command after having saved his country by a series of victories at the Dardanelles, and therefore the country felt pretty safe in confiding its destinies to the hands of Mustapha Kemal Pasha.

“The events have proved that this confidence could not have been better placed. Under the very guns of Turkey’s enemies he organized the national resistance and changed the prevailing state of nervousness and despondency into an intelligent state of national efficiency and enthusiasm.

Horizons to the Turkish people

Starting with a handful of followers he opened new horizons to the Turkish people, discouraged and brokenhearted by their previous utter collapse. While the nation lay prostrated at the mercy of its enemies, he stepped forth and showed ?o the Turks the silver lining behind the threatening clouds and demonstrated once more to the world that a nation which is led properly and has a will to live is unconquerable.

“Mustapha Kemal Pasha had a double duty to perform. Turkey disarmed and bound hand and foot, her capital occupied by the enemy, her Government departments and administration completely disorganized, had to regain her independence and needed therefore not only a capable military chief but also a capable organizer and statesman.

Mustapha Kemal Pasha rose to the occasion and while he was organizing on one hand the military resources of his country, while he was arming and training thousands of recruits and building up factories to furnish them with guns and ammunition and to clothe them as best he could, he was on the other hand helping the National Assembly to formulate a new constitution, to make a new form of government a sort of republic fitted to the peculiar requirements of Turkey based on the broadest and most practical principles of democracy.

Founded these criticisms

But, however well founded these criticisms are, whatever the opposition which the work of Markvitchka provokes among the foreign artists and art critics, it is recognised on all hands that the services which he has rendered to art in Bulgaria are surpassed by few, if any, other artists.

Not less active than Markvitchka, though hardly so many sided, is his companion and friend Anton Mtioff, a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. He has been associated with Markvitchka in nearly all the artistic undertakings, old and new—art societies, foundation of the School of Painting, organisation of the Museum, exhibitions, execution of State and private orders. He paints national types, landscapes, town and village subjects, portraits, and icons. In his case also the ethnographical element holds the first place. He revels in details, closely imitates modem Russian and ancient Italian masters in his icons, and may be said to be the chief representative of a conventional impressionism which depends for its effects on an artificial contrast between light and shade. Although a bom fighter, and the most militant member of the old society, he does not display in his pictures any tendency to cope with difficulties, but prefers easy subjects which do not tax the artist’s inventiveness and require no originality in their treatment.

Bulgarian Artists is Ivan Angeloff

The best artist of the Society of Bulgarian Artists is Ivan Angeloff, who has studied in Munich and m Rome. He was the first Bulgarian artist to make use of the peasant, especially in his fieldwork. In contrast with Markvitchka,

Mitoff, and scores of others, Angeloff gives a secondary place to the ethnographical element, and is always preoccupied with rendering the artistic side of his subject. His pictures of this kind bear unmistakable signs of the influence of the French master Millet. In his pictures of town life he imitates the Italian conventional artists, while at one time he was under the influence of Segantini. Angeloff’s principal merit is that he understands the spirit of Bulgarian peasant life, and succeeds in imparting it to his pictures, which are psychological as well as artistic productions. Angeloff is an impressionist in his methods, but has a distinctly personal technique. What his pictures seem to suffer from is lack of air and movement. Neither is he always successful in individualising faces, or in bringing them into unison with their surroundings.

Of the remaining artists of the old school, the majority belong to the conventional type (for example, Petko Klis souroff) or are imitators of foreign masters (for instance, Boris Mihailoff). The name of Otto Horeisha (Terek) deserves a mention apart. One of the first among the foreign artists to settle in Bulgaria, he may be said to be the best Bulgarian painter of quiet, melancholy scenery, the battlefields of the last RussoTurkish war having furnished him with subjects for some of his best compositions—“ Russian Cemetery at the Peak of St. Nicolas,” “ On Shipka, Twentyfive Years After.” The execution of these otherwise excellent subjects suffers from a certain conventionality in the treatment.

Beginning of the Christian era India

Social Structure

We can present a rough picture of the social structure that developed in this period. Society was dominated by princes and priests. The princes claimed the status of brahmanas or kshatriyas though many of them were local tribal chiefs promoted to the second varna through benefactions made to the priests. The priests invented respectable family trees for these chiefs and traced their descent from age old solar and lunar dynasties, This process enabled the new rulers to acquire legitimacy in the eyes of the people.

The priests were mainly brahmanas, though the Jaina and Buddhist monks should also be placed in this category. In this phase priests gained in influence and authority because of land grants. Below the princes and priests came the peasantry, which was divided into numerous peasant castes. Possibly most of them were called sutras in the brahmamcal system. If the peasant and artisan castes failed to produce and render services and payments, it was looked upon as a departure from the established dharma or norm

Such a situation was described as the age of Kali. It was the duty of the king to put an end to such a state pf affairs and restore peace and order which worked in favor of chiefs and priests. The title dhamamaharaja therefore is adopted by the Vakataka, Pallava, Kadamba and Western Ganga kings. The real founder of the Pallava power, Simhavarman, is credited with coming to the rescue of dharma when it was beset with the evil attributes typical of the Kahyuga, Apparently it refers to his suppression of the Kalabhras who upset the existing social order

India’s Cultural Contacts with the Asian Countries

Medieval lawgivers and commentators ordained that a person should not cross the seas. This would imply that India shunned all relations with the outside world. But this is not so, for India maintained contacts with its Asian neighbors since Harappan times. Indian traders went to the cities of Mesopotamia, where their seals belonging to the period between 2400 B.C. and 1700 B.C have been found.

From the beginning of the Christian era India maintained commercial contacts with China, Southeast Asia, West Asia and the Roman Empire. We have seen how the Indian land routes were connected with the Chinese Silk Route. We have also dwelt on India’s commercial intercourse with the eastern part of the Roman Empire. In addition to this India sent its missionaries, conquerors and traders to the neighboring countries where they founded settlements.

Into this, the tempered clay is dumped and the surplus normally smoothed off with the side of the hand. The mound is then lifted and the brick left to dry in the sun. It is this concluding process, which sets a geographical limit to countries in which mud bricks can be used, since cloudless skies and hot sunshine are indispensable to their manufacture. In almost all countries of the Near East such conditions are favorable during at least a part of the year, and up to comparatively recent times, kiln baked bricks have consequently been considered a luxury.

It is for this reason that today, in those countries, a proper understanding of the nature and uses of this material, particularly in Iraq, has become as indispensable to a twentieth century excavator as it was to the architects of antiquity. In neighboring countries where stone is available, a wall may have stone foundations or even be built up to a height of several feet in stone before the brick begins. In Anatolia particularly, the structure above this may be a framework of wooden beams, forming panels, which are filled with mud brick. In all cases the wall is finished inside and out with a plastering of mud and straw. Outside at least, this has to be renewed every year.

Kara George had saved the country by his glorious battle

Thus, the Turks, with little trouble, regained possession of Kulin’s scimitar. They conducted their prisoners, under an armed escort, through Bosnia, and at length to Constantinople: whence none of them ever returned.

Antonie Bogitsehewitsch was no longer alive, to defend Losnitza, as he had formerly done. Peter Molcr, who had taken his place, did not, it is true, sutler himself to be duped by the bishop’s assurances ; bnt he did not venture to defend the place; and was content to effect his own escape.

In like manner Knes Sima allowed the Turks to advance, without coming to any regular engagement. Kven when they attacked the fortress of liawanj, which was defended by the valiant AVoi  wodes Stojan Tschupitsch, ]\1 iloscli Obrenowitscli, and rota Xenadowitsch  he remained inactive in his camp: paralysed by an unaccountable insensibility : he sent neither ammunition, (of which those chiefs soon felt the want,) nor troops, whose aid they greatly needed: were it only to procure a brief repose after the fatigues to Avhich they had been subjected, and their protracted loss of sleep. For seventeen harassing days, the Woi wodes defended the entrenchment; during which time they affirm that they suffered such privations as had never before been endured in a fortress. At length they abandoned the place to the enemy; who now advanced against Schabaz, where Ivnes Sima was encamped.

The country was now in greater danger than ever. In the year 180G, many considered themselves lost when the Turks had forced their way only from the Drina to Schabaz, without having touched any other districts ; in 1809, the country was thought to be ruined because the enemy had obtained possession of the right bank of the Morawa; but now the Moslems had advanced victorious on both sides, and the Schumadia alone remained free from the invaders. In the first war, Kara George had saved the country by his glorious battle on the Mischar; and, in the second, he had made such excellent arrangements, that the left bank of the Morawa remained unmolested, and in a short time he was able to re conquer the right bank.

Amidst the present difficulties, he was looked for with greater anxiety than ever. An opportunity was now afforded him of establishing his claims to the exercise of sovereign sway over the whole country: he might now have exemplified the uses and privileges of monarchical power. But, from some incomprehensible cause, he neither appeared on the Drina, on the Danube, nor on the Morawa: he remained inactive, with some Momkes; at one time in Topola, at another in the vicinity of Belgrade : nowhere was he seen, and many persons actually believed him to be dead.

Nightly earnings of Istanbul

After this they became intoxicated with their success and considering their enterprise as a mint, proceeded to spend its nightly earnings as rapidly as they were won. They disposed of their profits at their own gambling tables, they lavishly entertained their friends and guests by consuming indiscriminately their own stocks of wines and food, and naturally within another couple of months they were obliged to close their doors.

But many other amusement places flourish still in Pera under the management of Russians, who are most ingenious in this kind of enterprise. A former officer of the Russian army once came to us and asked us to finance a scheme which would have made a second Monte Carlo of Constantinople.

As we did not care to enter into this kind of business we lost sight of him for quite a long period. He came back one day, however, and told us that his scheme having fallen through he and his family had been so near starvation that they had just about decided to commit suicide collectively when it occurred to him to commercialize the hobby he had in his days destination Bulgaria of prosperity, namely, cabinet and furniture making. He had offered his services for this purpose to a new restaurant which had immediately commissioned him.

His wife, a former lady in waiting of the Tzarina, had become a cook in this restaurant and their daughter, a child of about fifteen, had had the good luck to find a position as lady’s maid with some well-to-do foreigners. Thus the family had been saved from starvation and the former officer is now one of the most successful furniture makers of Constantinople. He had heard that we were enlarging our offices and wanted to figure on the new furniture we needed. Needless to say that he got the order.

Some Russians have, of course, regular business propositions like the man who undertook and succeeded in exchanging for the account of some friends of mine, jewels, petroleum and caviar from Caucasia for American flour and condensed milk, a transaction which brought very substantial profits to himself and to my friends. Others, however, have propositions which are businesslike or practicable only to their unaccustomed eyes.

Some come just with an idea and expect you to jump at it and give them a substantial participation, like an Old Russian admiral who came once to us suggesting that we should purchase one of the cargo boats of the Russian Volunteer fleet which was to be sold at auction next week for the payment of debts. He believed that by making an offer before the public auction the boat could be purchased at a bargain price.

Creditors British and Greek

The poor old admiral was very much disappointed when it was explained to him that the creditors British and Greek firms were the ones who forced the sale and would be satisfied only by the highest price obtainable as their claims exceeded by far the market value of the ship. He had counted on the influence he still had with Russian circles to accomplish this transaction. He had counted on this to keep his body and soul together. His clothes were shabby and his shoes were patched.

Who was Fidel Castro?

Just a few weeks short of the 60th anniversary of Fidel Castro’s landing on Cuba, the comandante took his last breath. With him, dies the most significant chapter in the history of a country that has only recently reopened, albeit cautiously, its eyes and arms to the rest of the world. By the time Fidel Castro died at the age of 90 last week, he had been out of the public eye and ruling office in Cuba for almost an entire decade.

In essence, this event would equate to one of our distant former President or Prime Minister passing. Yet while a few uninformed folks asked ‘so what’s the big deal, anyway?’ millions all over the world took a collective sigh of shock. Not shock because a 90-year-old man died, but shock because Castro, a man who survived an alleged 600 assassination attempts and outlived 11 presiding US Presidents, not to mentioned defined an entire chapter of 20th century world history, was now gone.

Opinions abound as to what will happen in Cuba now that Fidel Castro has died. As the shockwaves of his passing continue to rock the small Caribbean island, we take a step back in history, and a peek forward, to better understand what this monumental event means for one of the most enigmatic countries in all of Latin America.

Who was Fidel Castro?

Fidel Castro was the revolutionary leader who brought about the end of Fulgencio Batista’s military dictatorship in Cuba in 1956. Leading the Cuban Revolution alongside fellow revolutionary Che Guevara against US-backed Batista, and banishing its powerful neighbour, is what primarily cements Castro’s name in the history books. Just a few years later, he once again managed to repel an attack by a CIA-sponsored paramilitary troop, in the failed Bay of Pigs Invasion, something which further consolidated Castro’s reputation as an extraordinary revolutionary, one not afraid to stand up to the might and power of a menacing and meddling United States.

Castro became a symbol of freedom and independence in all of Latin America and his revolutionary communist ideals scored him support all over the world. When people speak of Castro as ‘inspirational’ it is to these events that they are referring to. When others speak of him as an oppressive ruler, however, they are referring to what he did shortly thereafter, and what he continued to do for the next five decades.

According to his most fervent critics, Castro simply replaced one dictatorship with another. He ruled ferociously, didn’t tolerate dissent and found allies in the most unlikely and dubious places. Anyone who detested the United States admired Castro by default and the feeling was very much reciprocated. Once cut off from the West, Castro forged strong economic bonds with the Soviet Union and plunged his country into abject poverty and struggle once the USSR disbanded.

At home, he heavily restricted freedoms of expression, freedoms of press and personal freedoms in general. Communism is a wonderful ideal, theoretically, but it needs strong leadership to survive against the basic human desire to have just that little bit more. History has shown that humans don’t take too well to authoritarian Socialist rule.

Castro created not only the first Communist state in the Western hemisphere but also a Soviet-style domestic police force which was said to be ruthless. Scores of political prisoners have been locked up and, in an attempt to protect ‘state security’, human rights abuses in Cuba were said to have been extensive. Media, the courts, the police and every other aspect of the government was singularly dictated, to the extent that independence of any kind, for the most part, was non-existent.

A condemned general of Batista’s army clutches a crucifix A condemned general of Batista’s army clutches a crucifix as he receives his last rights from a priest, before being executed by Castro’s firing squad in 1959. The photo, taken by Andrew Lopez, won the Pulitzer Prize in 1960 .

On the other hand, Castro developed remarkable health-care and education systems, making his country a world-leader in both aspects. He also created the kind of nationalistic support that many find difficult to understand. If you’ve visited Cuba before you will no doubt have detected the strong pride locals have in their country, and their leader. He created a resilient population, one which is incredibly resourceful. He shaped an inherent culture of togetherness in his subjects. They say people come together in times of trials and tribulations, and Cubans certainly suffered plenty of those.

In a relatively short period of historic time, Fidel Castro and Cuba became synonyms of one another. Castro didn’t just rule Cuba, Castro was Cuba. And Cuba was Castro. Throughout all of this eclectic and exhaustive list of pros and cons, Castro came to embody his country as very few country leaders in history have ever done. The yin and yang of Castro’s rule over Cuba is what has made him such a polarizing figure of the 20th century and the reason why the media will continue to speak of him for many more years to come.

So in the end, the answer to the question ‘Who was Fidel Castro?’ will depend highly on whom it is you ask. As it is often said: one man’s freedom fighter is another man’s terrorist. When describing Castro, nothing seems more pertinent than that.

As Castro’s legacy continues to endure in Cuba as it always has it would be naive to think that change, perhaps even BIG change, will not be now hastened. Sorrow and shock have been evident from all reports coming from the island, but we suspect there will be many relieved that the man responsible for their country’s political headlock and economic repression is no more. Many will push for change and, quite possibly, very fast change.

Rich are charged with pious dedications

The rich are charged with pious dedications, the performance of vows, tile rites of hospitality, alms, offerings and the manumission of slaves, gifts, and sacrifices. By what means can you attain to their power, who can perform only your genuflexions, and even those with a hundred difficulties?  The rich perform both moral and religious duties in the most perfect manner, because they possess wealth, out of which they bestow alms: their garments are clean, and their reputation spotless, with minds void of care. For the power of obedience is found in good meals, the truth of worship in a clean garment. For what strength can there be with an empty stomach? What bounty from an empty hand? How can the fettered feet walk? And from the hungry belly, what munificence can be expected? He sleeps uneasily at night, who knows not how to provide for the morrow.

The ants store up in summer, that in winter they may enjoy rest. Leisure and poverty are not found together, and satisfaction dwelletli not with distress. One is standing up to evening prayers, whilst the other is sitting down wishing for his supper. How can these two be compared together? He who possesses wealth is busied in devotion, whilst he who is distressed in his circumstances has a disordered heart.

Therefore the worship of the rich is more acceptable, their minds being collected and not distracted f for as they are possessed of the means of subsistence, they can turn their whole thoughts to devotion. The Arabians’ say, ‘God defend me from distressful poverty, and from the neighborhood of him whom I dislike.’ And there is a tradition from the Prophet, that, ‘Poverty lies a black countenance in both worlds.’ ”

My antagonist asked, “Have you not heard that the Prophet said, ‘Poverty is my glory ? ’ ” 1 replied, “Be silent, for the Prophet alludes to them who suffer in poverty of spirit, with submission to the arrows of destiny; and not those who, in a religious garb, sell the scraps which have been given them in charity. O loud sounding empty drum will you manage on the march without provisions? If thou art a man, free thyself from worldly advice, instead of turning in your hand a string of a thousand beads. A Durwesh without vital religion, will not rest until his poverty ends in blasphemy. He who is in poverty, is in danger of blasphemy.

Honduran cuisine is a marvellous mix of indigenous, Lenca flavours, Spanish flare, Caribbean spice and African influences. Coconut and coconut milk is used in almost everything, from savoury meat dishes, to sweet pastries and cakes.

Regional specialties include fried fish with pickled onions and jalepiños, hot tamales, meat roasted with Chismol, carne asada, and the most famous dish, baleadas. Baleadas are an extra thick corn tortilla, filled with fried beans, crumbled cheese and crema.

The Hondurans are also crazy about their soups. They eat them in winter to warm up, and in summer to regulate body temperature and cool down. Some of the most popular soups are; mondongo soup, made with tripe, searing seafood soup, beef soup and bean soup. All of which are made from scratch, in the true Honduran way.

Eat local

Although Honduras is cheap compared to most places in Central America, the country has become savvy to the world of tourism. Many of the restaurants and bars in the popular areas have raised their prices to a surprising high, but the smaller restaurants keep their prices low for the locals.

Don’t throw things

It’s a cultural offence to pass something to someone by throwing it. Honduran people are very tactile, and always pass items from hand to hand. They see the gesture of throwing something as an insult, as they reserve this act only for the dogs in the street.

Carry small bills

Using large bills, such as 100 or 500 Lempiras in smaller shops is extremely rude to the owner, as you are asking him to have change that’s equivalent to his weekly wage on hand. Be sure to carry small bills when shopping in very rural or local areas to avoid this.
